What to Wear for Your Family Session
After you’ve booked your family in for photos, you start thinking about what outfits you want to wear. Your outfit choices are just as important as the location of your shoot! I’m here to help you with the whole process….don’t worry you’re not alone!
I’ve always said since day 1, comfort is key! If you wear something and are not 100% comfortable, it shows in your portraits! To help you prepare, here are my best tips for dressing your whole family.

A few days before your session, set aside time to pull outfits together and avoid last-minute stress. Pick a palette of 3–4 coordinating colors and spread them across your family’s outfits. Think of a clothing catalog: everyone looks like they belong together, but no one person stands out more than the rest.
Layers always photograph beautifully—consider cardigans, vests, or scarves for added texture. In general, sleeveless shirts and shorts on adults are less flattering in photos, while well-chosen layers can elevate your look.
Arrange the outfits on a bed (accessories included!) so you can see how they work together. Be sure everything is pressed and ready to go, and don’t forget that clean, stylish shoes complete the look.

Choose fitted, casual clothing that lets them move naturally and show off their personalities. Layers—like cute jackets or sweaters—add texture without fuss.
What to skip? Oversized bows, makeup, or hairspray. Baggy clothes also tend to look sloppy and can hide your child’s shape, so opt for well-fitted outfits instead.
Pick clothing that flatters your body type while blending with the family’s overall palette. Solids usually photograph best, and simple, natural makeup keeps the focus on you rather than your cosmetics.
Avoid logos, bold patterns, and a lot of white. White tends to wash out skin tones and easily picks up color reflections from the surroundings. Also skip sleeveless tops, shorts, or baggy outfits, unless your session is intentionally casual or dressy for a special reason.
✨ With these tips, your family’s clothing will not only look amazing but also allow your personalities to shine through. The goal is simple: comfort, coordination, and confidence—so you can relax and enjoy your session!
Spring • Works well with: Fresh, soft tones that feel light and airy • Colours: Blush, soft pink, lavender, mint green, sky blue, light yellow, cream, soft grey • Tip: Pastels look amazing against blossoming trees, florals, and fresh greenery.

Summer • Works well with: Bright, cheerful, and bold colors with a relaxed vibe • Colours: Coral, turquoise, teal, mustard yellow, navy, crisp white, sand/ beige • Tip: Think coastal or picnic vibes—light fabrics, linen, and airy layers shine in the summer sun.

Fall • Works well with: Warm, rich, earthy tones that echo autumn leaves • Colours: Deep burgundy, burnt orange, mustard, forest green, camel, cream, navy, chocolate brown • Tip: Layering textures like knits, corduroy, and scarves feels cozy and photographs beautifully.

Winter • Works well with: Cool, rich, and jewel-toned shades that pop against bare trees or snow • Colours: Emerald green, deep red, royal blue, plum, silver, charcoal, ivory • Tip: Darker tones paired with soft neutrals create a chic, timeless look. Add a cozy coat or knit for texture.
