Some family photography sessions are about capturing a moment in time. Others are about capturing the end of a chapter.
Recently, a client reached out to me about photographing her family one last time in their home.
This wasn’t just any house. It was the home where her family had grown, where her children had made memories, where everyday life happened — the laughter, the routines, the little moments that make a house feel like home.
They were preparing to sell the house, and before they moved on to their next chapter, she wanted to document their family exactly as they were, in the place that had meant so much to them.
I felt so honoured that she trusted me to capture it.
There was something incredibly special about photographing them in their own space. Kids could be themselves. We could move from room to room, have playful moments, capture the little details and the spaces that held so many memories.
It reminded me why I love in-home family sessions so much.
Your home doesn’t have to be perfect. Your children don’t have to be perfectly posed.
What matters is that you’re documenting your life as it is right now.
Because one day, the toys will be gone. The artwork will come down. The kids will be taller. The house may belong to someone else.
But you’ll still have the photographs.

Before your session, take a few minutes to think beyond the traditional family portrait.
What parts of your home are meaningful to you?
Maybe it’s your child’s bedroom. The kitchen where everyone gathers. The couch where you have movie nights. The backyard where your kids play.
Planning out your session and what matters to you is so important. Those little details can become some of the most meaningful photographs from your session.
You don’t need to deep clean every room or make your home look like a magazine.
Tidy the areas you’d like photographed, but don’t stress about every little thing.
Your home is part of your family’s story.
Sometimes the little details — a favourite stuffed animal, artwork on the fridge, books beside the bed or tiny shoes by the door — are exactly what you’ll want to remember years from now.
Before your session, think about how you want to enjoy these memories once the photos are finished.
Do you want a beautiful album to look through together?
Do you want photographs printed for your children’s bedrooms?
Maybe you want a large family portrait hanging in your home, or a collection of smaller frames telling the story of your family.

Think about how you want these memories to exist in your home and in your children’s lives.
Because photographs aren’t just for remembering what your family looked like.
They’re for remembering how your family felt.
And sometimes, the most meaningful photographs aren’t taken somewhere beautiful or elaborate.
They’re taken at home.
In the place where your family grew.
Your family is changing every day — and these are the moments you’ll wish you could step back into someday.
Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, celebrating your growing family, documenting the kids exactly as they are right now, or preparing to move from a home filled with memories, an in-home family session is a beautiful way to preserve this chapter.
